If it's to hire someone, you look for the best work and person for the position. If it's something similar to the Meet the Pros we were at, where you are trying to help out students, I have always taken the approach to be honest, but also give them the best advice you can to present their work in the best light. I wrote my opinions on the quickest things I think students can do to present their work better <a href="http://www.beadesigngroup.com/blog/archives/2005/05/preparing_and_presenting_a_por.php" rel="nofollow">here</a> back in 2005. This was one of the resources we used for this podcast along with <a href="http://www.beadesigngroup.com/blog/archives/2006/02/things_you_need_in_your_portfo.php" rel="nofollow">posting the items I like to see in a book</a> I wrote in 2006.
