Hey guys, its Brandon (The I.D. Student from the Chip Kidd episode) and I have a holiday design review topic.
I'd like to note the Macy's ad for the Holidays this year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm2FJMJWKkQ
Macy's is reaching back 150 years and showing the many clips where they were mentioned in television culture. Seeing this span of time compressed into about 1 minute is almost overwhelming. It not only evokes emotion with these classic clips, but shows a sense of brand stability in uncertain times. I mean its like Macy's has the holiday season on lockdown! They practically open the season with the Thanksgiving day parade... and then provide all the Christmas magic through their in-store experiences (Santa, decorations, shopping).
In addition, is it just me or did it seem like Macy's really re-branded sometime last year around the "Star" idea? They started showing commercials where famous stars are working their brands to make Macy's a "star" place to shop.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdpkdcvGAaA
Despite seeming a little hokey and staged, it's actually pretty clever, some of the jokes are funny and it makes Macy's seem like high-end, big brand retail at an affordable price.
Also, you can't argue with the Macy's logo. Avant Garde EF Extra Light for the text and a simple big red star. Hard to forget, easy to read. But seriously, what is with the all lowercase??!
