I’m on the job hunt, currently, which occasionally feels more like a scavenge, and I will from time to time get a heads up for Craigslist. I don’t frequent it. The reason for this is that every time I do, every post I see looks exactly like the one above. It starts with an insult to an unnamed foe, continues with the promise of a world-changing idea, and reaches its climax on several notes that make a vague commitment to something resembling, but never confirming, compensation. I have a friend or two — in larger markets — who swear by it, but I can hold no feelings of legitimacy for those who post their jobs on it.
Though I heard that’s where Pentagram gets their partners. Maybe?

Oh Craig’s List. I have quit CL a total of three times, and I hope it’s for good. Over the years, I have found several apartments through the List, but the jobs have been less fruitful. To date, every job (freelance or full-time) has ended badly, usually from a fundamental misunderstanding of the design profession and how to hire/treat employees.
However, I have just started a new role that came about through CL. In this case, the ad didn’t promise much, just the opposite in fact, it was dreadfully, almost comically vague. We’ll see how it goes.
So recently I finished a site for Morgan Ranch. About a month after that I received a phone call from a guy in Seattle interested in working with me because of that site. He wanted me to design their site using the Morgan stuff, then code the html / css, then also they needed a logo.
Their budget $500
I declined, nothing like asking me to throw strategy out the window and just copy.
A day later I came across this, posted by the same guy.

So, Adam, what you’re really saying is that you troll Craigslist for clients?
No I have this fancy thing called google analytics and alerts that found this for me :).
So you set up a sophisticated automatic Google program to troll CraigsList for you?
You’re practically writing Monday’s strip right now, man!
Hahaha, you know it. How else will I stay productive.
From my previous post though I left out that this guy tried to explain to me that it can’t be that hard to design / code this stuff for him because I had already done it once.
Can’t wait till a site selling knives pops up with my design. Definitely will have some fun with it.
Ouch, I hope you don’t see that Adam.
I once spent months working with a committee to create this identity. http://jessilong.com/long02.html
Only, just before implementation to find this http://www.cgnad.com/default.asp?action=article&ID=149
Of course the date of first initial usage on their trademark was um…coincidentally just after I had released my initial sketches.
Well played…
Jessi,
Thats sucks, at least I am in a better situation that it’s not my client trying to scam me out of sketches. This guys just wants to reuse something already created so he can get out cheep.
Silly really, because if he does end up copying its going to look so bad on him.

“Disregarding the fact that you have still not paid me for work I completed earlier this year despite several assertions that you would do so, I would be delighted to spend my free time creating logos and pie charts for you based on further vague promises of future possible payment. Please find attached pie chart as requested and let me know of any changes required.”
