What a conference! Really, it’s hard to say on any level that Matke/Think wasn’t better than the Denver ’07 Conference, at least from my perspective. We’ll do either a full podcast recap or a Review Gone Bad of the experience this week, as well as post our Reflex Blue Show with Ann Willoughby recorded before the trip. So there’s lots to say, and alas, as I plow through this Monday morning I find I have not the time to say it. So I leave you with this sketch, done for Friday, which was roundly defeated by our server and the Conference Wi-Fi’s double-team of destruction. Home, and with a proper scanner, I feel better about the result anyway.

Love –

Students, do you feel a lack of excitement in your current project? Do you need more direction on the design? Do you want to have a few unneeded rules to work with? We’re here to help!

Welcome to the official kickoff of the 36 Point Student Design Challenge! We think your college years are some of the most important years for graphic designers. While generally we like to think of graphic design students as a serious, studious bunch, with lots of learnings and yearnings going on, we know there’s a lighter, brighter side to your experience as well. Specifically, the side that knows how to use graphic design for awesome, instead of for good.

The Rules

Prizes will be awarded to students who complete a graded, class assignment/project that contains the following subversive Three Eements:

Element Number 1: The number 36, prominently. (rule by Donovan Beery)

Element Number 2: A color pallet that consists only of red and black ink on white paper — classic graphic design colors. (rule by Nate Voss)

Element Number 3: An <del>adult human male penis. (rule by Chip Kidd)</del> Sadly and upon great personal and profession introspection about the possibility of us getting into trouble for getting you kicked out of your program for the inclusion of said adult human male penis, and the slightly-less-troublesome, slightly-more-heinous replacement suggestion (by another friend of the show) of “dead puppies,” we have opted to amend Element #3 to the most penis-like thing we could find:

Element #3 (Revised): Donovan Beery’s head.

“Today we are joined by Stanley Hainsworth’s hair, and, by extension, Stanley Hainsworth himself.”

Stanley Hainsworth, if taken by his past works, could easily be described as a genius of design (take those stints creative-directing companies like Nike, Lego, and Starbucks for the past 20 years, for example). But when you add in his uncanny appearance, you know you must call him a mad genius! Not that he’s unpleasant, by any means. Stanley is in fact quite nice, and as it happens very forthcoming about his work.

What really makes this show shine was the interview took place about one month after Stanley Hainsworth left Starbucks to begin his own creative endeavor, Tether, which you can find out all about at www.tethercreate.com, and we kindly persuade Mr. Hainsworth to spill the proverbial beans on the project. Enjoy.

Stefan Bucher is the captain of creative passion. You want to feel inspired about the potential of your own work? You want to feel guilty about being burnt out? Hang out with Stefan for a day. On this, our second episode, we did just that. Stefan was, surprisingly, in Nebraska for several days painting a monster mural for Concordia University, and they were gracious enough to spare a few minutes of his time for us; during which we recorded this show and shot video for the short film Stefan Bucher: Monster Maker, where he created the monster we are putting up for auction. Hope you enjoy the show and we’ll see you next week!
