The Reflex Blue Show with Nate Voss and Donovan Beery, Episode 23: Justin Ahrens & Making Creative Matter
My solo trip to Chicago was punctuated with a trip 1 hour West to visit Justin Ahrens along with the fine fellows and lovely (lovely) ladies of Rule 29. Upon arrival in the frigid cold, I was showered with warmth and companionship, hospitality, and enough booze to drown a small horse. Justin, a frequent fixture of the HOW Conference and no-coast designer extraordinaire, took time away from his Brady-Bunch-happy office family to chat with me and guest-host Mig Reyes. Then, as often happens when I am alone at the controls, I lost the second half of the show, so we finished up via iChat with Donovan back in the saddle this morning to talk about Rule 29’s involvement with Life in Abundance and a few other topics of note. Please enjoy podcast 23 with your own tastey 312 beverage.

I can’t begin to describe how much Justin’s desire to ‘make creative matter’ has transformed the way that we communicate. On behalf of the people that we serve in Africa, thank you for highlighting Justin and the R29 team in this capacity.
Grateful,
The Team at Life in Abundance International
You mentioned in the show that you wanted some design topics you wanted to look at next year. I was thinking that it might be interesting to look at the holiday design material that big retail companies put out. These companies usually make their most money in the winter season and usually launch huge campaigns.
As you’ve mentioned, Starbucks always have a holiday identity (along with limited-time menu items).
Also, I think a lot of clever design goes into wrapping paper and gift card. Too bad they’re so disposable.
I finally got a chance to sit down and listen to the show. All I have to say is I’m karate choppin’ necks when I see you all. And I do mean choppin’ NECKS! Justin… hate your face so much right now! I did have an epic fail on the hand turkey, but I’m coming with heat for ’09.
Coat tails?! Coat tails?! (said like Mora’s “playoffs?!”) Get it right bro, I’m an apron strings guy on my end, bro! ha haaaa.
Love your body Larry!
BTW, you are a complete inspiration for so many of us who care where your heart and soul are at vs. where your fame and fortune are. We’ve known each other for a minute now and I will forever look up to you for that reason.
Now guard ya’ neck… I’m still warming up the karate hand.
Kaaaaaaaa-RATEE!
