Thanks to Darcy for the comments you made in regards to the session you spoke of at this year’s HOW Conference. It sounds like something I would have related to, had I been there. I learned all about sacrifice at a young age. My Mom was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1981 when I was only 3 years old. For the majority of my life, I have lived with this disease as much as she has. I don’t have much memory of her walking on her own. Throughout my childhood, I saw her move from a cane, to a walker, to a wheelchair, and then to a quadriplegic state. Suffice it to say, it has been hard. I graduated from college in 2001. Like any graduate, I was nervous, but felt like the world was at my fingertips. Shortly thereafter, my Dad was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. My career got pushed to the back burner. He had a total of 5 surgeries between 2003 and 2007, before passing away in December of 2007. During all that time, a part of me couldn’t believe all that had happened. How much time had passed, but how little progress I myself had made. And now, a part of me thinks, that it was all for a reason. I was needed here, so I was here. At the end of the day, design will always be there. You never know how long your family will be.
