Well- that wasn’t so bad…
In preparation for my podcasting/blogging for 36point.com at the HOW Interactive Design Conference in San Francisco, Donovan Beery fired up the ol’ garageband and condenser mic for a small test run of the ol’ Reflex Blue Show. CHECK IT.
Farewell good listeners- when we meet again it shall be on the bright shores of balmy San Francisco!

When I first started working for self-proclaimed “media mogul” Donovan Beery– I can’t say it never entered my mind. I mean- Donovan was so busy flying all over the country to interview graphic design’s brightest stars- that he would have to cave in at some time:
He’d have to ask me to go in his place.
So, just as the faithful servant in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (yes, the Mickey Mouse version– nobody saw that new one), I slaved away completing my daily design tasks at Eleven19– just waiting for that old, mysterious wizard (Donovan) to leave his magical wizard hat to me.
And then it happened.
“Ben, you’re going to San Francisco”

Yes, I’m excited. Yes, I’m nervous. And no… I’ve never done a podcast before. But then again- this aint no “Design Matters“, right? I mean- The Reflex Blue Show is kind of known for it’s wild, last-minute, nitty-gritty, unedited realism, right? Well- I’m kinda counting on that anyway…
Tomorrow morning I have my debut podcast session with Donovan and Nate. This could be terrible… or this could be beautiful. Either way- won’t you join me on this fantastic journey?
Spending almost an hour being made to feel like a Fox News flame-war anchor, I admit, may have gotten me into a feisty mood when it came to naming today’s show (the graphic, though, is just me being a dick because Donovan left me off the last podcast’s artwork).
‘s campaign holds a poster contest that doesn’t maybe crosses a the line from grassroots community builder into KILL-IT-WITH-FIRE Spec Work. AIGA overreacts and/or overcompensates writes a letter. Nate and Drew who may be thankful his name actually didn’t make the show title? spar while Donovan tries to make Nate feel like an idiot for even bringing it up tries to make Nate feel like an idiot for even bringing it up.
THE FINAL VERDICT MAY SHOCK YOUno it won’t.
And for our audio recap of the conference, we brought in Cami Travis-Groves, Mike Joosse, and Bill Moran of Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. After seeing his letterpress posters I covered, how could I not?
Once again, I’ll keep this short, as my conference reviews are already in written form at the Neenah Paper blog. Since yesterdays recap, I spoke of sitting on a chair made of seat belts, Robert Brunner still being a design genius and Chip Kidd becoming a super villain.
As for the day two recap, I bring in one of our favorite guests in Justin Ahrens, the voice of Neenah Paper’s social media in Jamie Saunders and one of the last conferences’ Command X participants telling us what it’s like on the other side of the competition in Ryan Fitzgibbon.
