Dave Nelson demonstrates yet again why he is one of the most vital designers working out of Nebraska right now with his new site, WhyIAmVotingForObama.com. It’s an honest, earnest look at the candidate through the eyes of a devout Christian, for single-issue (ie: abortion) voters. Dave’s been a guest of our show (and earlier on the Be A Design Cast) and you can see more of his great work here, and at his blog here.
I got the word first from frequent podcast guest Steve Gordon on his post, but this already looks to be making the rounds quickly. Sure, Pepsi can change there logo without me caring much, but if Mountain Dew really tries to go this much less eXtreme with its identity, I will be sad. No amount of caffeine will cheer me up when this occurs.
Why spend years selling yourself as the eXtreme choice only to come out with an identity that will lead to Coldplay in your commercials?
Apparently unleashing the limits of awesomeness upon the cosmos can have some pretty serious karmic-repercussions: The Universe does not want us to record our show on Adobe CS4. In fact you could say at this point the Universe, Karma, Sauron, and possibly even the dark side of the force (remember that movie from the 70’s?) are conspiring against us.
We’ll be back next week with a new show if the solar system hasn’t collapsed into a black hole by then.

Every few months, like clockwork, the dreaded email inbox fills up a bit too much for comfort. In times like these, I know I have to stop what I am doing and take care of the issue. A few of these may have already been sent around, but I liked them, so here they are.
From Brett (and Kyle too): I got sent this by a friend and thought about the taboo typeface, anyhow I don’t know if you’ve seen it but, it’s funny. View the Font Conference.
From Julie: Thought you might enjoy this video of Steve Jobs on hiring Paul Rand to help solve his Apple logo dilemma. Love the show, been listening for a long time, great guests!
From Ammunition: Beats by Dr. Dre Release
I guess Robert Brunner (two time guest of our previous podcast, and all around product design genius) and Dr. Dre designed some headphones you can buy at the Apple store. That is a meeting I would have loved to been in. I actually tried these on while in the Omaha Apple store, and WOW! So, I put on these headphones, and all sound in the store was gone. The music from the iPod never sounded so clear. I instantly had that thought of, “these are too sweet, I know they are out of my price range.” $349.
Also from Ammunition: Announcing . . . Do you matter?
A new business book about design by Robert Brunner and Stewart Emery.
Seriously, this email was sent to me WHILE RECORDING OUR FALL READING PODCAST. It’s like Brunner knew, and wanted to let us know once again we were not trying hard enough with our choices. I ordered the book that night, and it looks great (any book with a Pentagram designed cover does), but as usual, it’ll be months before I get to reading it. $16.49 on Amazon.
Thanks for reading as I cleared out my inbox. It’s looking more manageable by the minute.
Update (10/16/08): Superstar Designer® Drew Davies has launched a new website for Oxide Design Co.
Von Glitschka (of Vonster, Art Backwash, the FBI, Illustration Class, and author of Crumble.Crackle.Burn. and the forthcoming Drip.Dot.Swirl.) returns to the show for the first time (on the new show)! Von was in town to judge the local design competition and sat down with us again. Originally this show would have been Episode 20, with Episode 19 devoted to the newly announced Adobe CS4 — except that halfway through Von drops the bomb on us that he was heavily involved in many of the updated features that make us purr about Illustrator CS4. We also cover Logo Lounge (which he judged — another bomb) and how there are designers out there who actually don’t get something in the book when they enter. (we have never entered, BTW.) Also joining us is special guest Steve RDQlus Gordon.
