This HOW had an energy I missed. It was great to see such a large gathering of designers in one place, and to also have the opportunity to explore a new town. Truthfully, I did not really make it off of the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, but the place felt like its own town, so I’ll count it. After my three daily recaps from HOW Design Live, I will be releasing a total of eight other podcasts I recorded while there over the next few months. Thanks again to HOW Design Live for a great event, and once again bringing in a great host of speakers to inspire until next year.

Desmond LaVelle & Jennifer Martindale: The Reflex Blue Show #240

Desmond LaVelle and Jennifer Martindale were the keynote speaker of AAF Nebraska‘s Meet the pros this year. Well, unlike most years where each keynote speaks over one of the two lunches, they simply did a back-to-back, or as they called it, a double header. As always, the event was great, and I always highly recommend it to all students within a few hours of Omaha.

Since we were at a student event, of course we discuss student advice, as well as getting that first job. As the SVP of Marketing for the Chicago Cubs, Jennifer talks about working in the sports industry, and as the biggest khaki expert I have ever met through his work with Dockers, Desmond introduces me to the term ‘pocket bags’, and my life is already better for it.

We also talk about Desmonds new book, The French Word for Murder, seeing Rowdy Roddy Piper in Omaha, and more.

Petre Spassov: The Reflex Blue Show #239

I first met Petre Spassov at the 2011 AIGA Conference in Phoenix, and since then have been fortunate enough to receive a few of his promotional pieces for PS Design. As he has created some of the best self-promotional design pieces I have seen, I thought it would be fun to have him visit The Reflex Blue Show and discuss what goes into a good self promo for a designer, and what the goal of one should be.

We also talk about his studio (PS Design), his collaborative studio (Reform Design), student portfolios, AI (I mean, I feel like it has to be discussed some, it’s 2023, right?), and more.
